What is a freshwater pearl? Freshwater pearls are nothing but  cultured pearls, from a long pearl tradition originating in China. Today, they are raised in mollusks (mostly mussels) found in lakes or rivers. Each mussel can produce up to 40 pearls, unlike saltwater mollusks which will only produce one or two. In appearance and structure, they look more like natural pearls than any other cultured pearl. Freshwater pearls are made exclusively from  mother of pearl. They are nucleated using organic material, usually a fragment of another shell. This is why it is almost impossible to find two perfectly identical pearls. How to care for cultured pearls  ? Pearls need to be maintained and cleaned to keep their shine. It is recommended to keep them away from air and heat, and keep them away from other jewelry to avoid scratches or bumps. There are different techniques for cleaning your pearls. You can wipe your pearls regularly with a soft, damp cloth, especially without rubbing. Then dry them with a dry cloth. For a deep clean, about every two years, use a few drops of olive oil on a soft cloth. And pass it delicately on your pearls.
